Indian Health Service's mission is to provide health care and related services for American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes, as well as their descendants. The organization helps to deliver health care, social, and environmental health services for nearly 2 million members of more than 550 tribes, which reside in 35 states, primarily in the western US and Alaska. The organization's health service delivery system includes 33 hospitals, some 60 health centers, about 50 health stations, and 34 Urban Indian health projects. The agency is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
