By 1941 the superhero orange of the Golden Age of comic books had pretty much been squeezed of it s last drop of originality and it had started to very badly feed on itself with the last few new ones to come along before the first dieing off of the Mystery Man genre started Yankee Comics was part of this with it s main character Yankee Doodle Jones being a pretty blatant Captain America rip off He and his sidekick having been given their edge over evil doers by a serum like Cap s super soldier injection However there was a difference with Y D J which is why I find him interesting enough to bring up Instead of starting out a 90 pound weakling like C A did Jones was sort of a Frankenstein s patriot being built from the bodies of three handicapped World War I veterans who give up their lives so Y D J could be put together and brought to life by the serum and as seems a prerequisite with this sort of thing as soon as that happened out popped a Nazi who kills the doc don t they ever do a room check first but not before the doctor s son also took a shot of the stuff so he could become Y D J s sidekick Dandy after that is they had both stomped the Nazi and the spirit of Uncle Sam himself had appeared to them calling them to duty Oh and just for the record Jones soon finds that he can supercharge himself by whistling the tune Yankee Doodle Dandy In subsequent stories the undead origin of Jones is forgotten and he became just another guy clobbering Nazi agents disguised as Robin Hood and his Marry Men to rob from the rich and give to Hitler and the like I can only imagine how Frankenstein angle would be emphasized today which by the way you can do as Jones and all the other characters in Yankee Comic are unless I m mistaken public domain now Oh and those other characters They were 1 Yankee Boy just your average 15 year old who puts on a funny looking suit and goes after evil 2 Barry Kuda A water breathing member of the kingdom of Merma who along with his pal Algie protected Merma
