We have grown to one of the largest comic book chains in the Midwest with the help of all of our customers, (please excuse the sappiness). Downtown Comics carries most anything related to comics and mainstream media, ranking it in the top 5% grossing comic book stores in the nation.

After twelve years I finally got to drive the Miata This car was my mother s 40th birthday present to herself in late 1993 I was never allowed to drive it because over the years I haven t had sufficient practice time to master the elusive stick shift and my parents were very protective of the car and all the parts I could ruin on it Mummy recently got a new car and she FINALLY let me drive the Miata We practiced in the parking lots on International Way in Milwaukie then when I was getting a little more confident we went to downtown Milwaukie where there is low traffic on weeknights and a lot of four way stops to practice on my problem with stick shifts is when I want to start moving After driving around downtown Milwaukie I m in front of Dark Horse Comics in this photo I even drove home It was super cool Unfortunately my whole family will miss this car It has been very well taken care of over the years but you can t fit dogs and people and groceries etc into a two seater convertible

After I had been in the downtown area of El Paso for nearly a week I got to know a lot of people who basically hung out there The Shoe Shine Boys were the focus of my efforts but I made other observations and temporary friends with other people This man s name was Johnny And although I met him in 1976 I remember him well He had served in the Army during World War Two And by me telling him I had recently received my discharge from the Army and I was a soldier in Vietnam I got him to open up I also let him and the shoe shine boys know I was a photography student from UTEP and I had to work on an assignment showing quot people and buildings quot Johnny wore a tattered hat all the time On his right sleeve he hand stitched the word MOON If you enlarge this picture you ll see some evidence of MOON I asked Johnny what the significance of MOON was and ironically I understood the rather convoluted meaning and logic of MOON as he explained it to me He said he felt comfortable most of the time during the war but when moonlight fell on him he didn t seem so far away from home Johnny was a young guy in World War Two and as many young guys who go away from home for the first time especially to serve in a war zone Johnny for the first time in his life as he explained to me and I remember it vividly because I too had the same experience he said he felt isolated far away from the people he felt comfortable with and he was on the other side of the world from family and friends When I hit Vietnam I was 19 years old about to turn 20 I recall with extraordinary detail at how I didn t seem to fit in on the far side of the planet Many of the guys in my unit were doing hard and soft drugs I came from a very conservative family and one of the several reasons I joined the Army I was tired of seeing protesters in the news Everyone in my family were Republicans and they hated the protesters not the war I was also terrified I would get drafted and be made an Army cook One of my paranoi
