The commission advises the government on proposed public buildings and private buildings next to public ones and important plots of land. It also consults on projects in the historic district, the design of US coins and medals, battle monuments and war memorials, and any other matters pertaining to art raised by the administration. Additionally, the commission administers the National Capital Arts and Cultural Affairs program. Congress established the independent agency in 1910 to advise the government on matters of art and architecture that affect the appearance of the nation's capital.

John Ericsson Mounument West Potomac Park at Independence and Ohio Drive NW Sculptor James Earl Fraser Date 1926 Medium Granite although not a memorial to soldiers or men who led the country in battle John Ericsson s contribution to the Union victory was great His monument reads John Ericsson A D 1803 A D 1889 Inventor and Builder of the Monitor He Revolutionized Navigation by His Invention of the Screw Propeller although he didn t actually invent the propeller he perfected it But without question he did design the Union s first ironclad vessel the Monitor growing up in Sweden he studied machinery for hours After studying engineering and serving in the Swedish army he moved to London where he worked on a variety of projects including development of the screw propeller 1889 Ericsson felt unappreciated where he was so he visited the United States where he felt as though there was more respect for innovative genius He remained in the US for the next 50 years the Civil War brought fame to Ericsson which he felt he deserved Informants revealed Confederate plans to build an armor clad ship Sec Navy Gideon Wells called for proposals to build such a ship for the Union fleet Ericsson still angry with the navy from earlier battles sulked in NY until some wealthy shipbuilders persuaded him to submit his designs Ericsson s design called for a hull sheathed with iron plate overlaid with a low flat deck whose perpendicular sides extended below the water line and were protected by more iron plate The screw propeller and anchor all other vital machinery would be housed in this protective shell On deck Ericsson had other innovations a heavily armored revolving turret containing two 11 guns The turret shallow draft estimated 8 knot speed and armor would Ericsson guaranteed make his craft maneuverable versatile and invincible Senior navy officers scoffed at what they called Ericsson s cheese box on a raft Ericsson won over Welles October 1861 th

In 2001 XuanAnh was freshly out of college where he studied fine arts but ended up in an office job working for me XA didn t really like working He wanted to paint I encouraged him to quit his job I m really good at this so if you want to quit your job I will inspire you to do so and paint A few months after I left Vietnam that s exactly what he did He quit the office job and returned to Hanoi He painted He met a girl got married had a kid One day a New York collector saw his work online and acquired something This fall XuanAnh was granted a visa to visit so he could show his works in a group exhibition in Bedford NY as well as attend a month long artists workshop in Vermont in October He has never seen the leaves change before and he was going to spend October in Vermont A few weeks ago I caught up with him in New York City where he had been visiting all the museums since his arrival As I took him around the city XuanAnh reminded me of a gift I had given him in 2001 when he was still working in Saigon I brought him a Van Gogh coffee table book from the US and inscribed it with quot May you one day see the original works with your own eyes quot He d done just that Then I sent him to visit Washington where I would be for a week and showed him around the museums there too here he is at the Hirshhorn The kicker XuanAnh sold a painting at the exhibition in Bedford and after the commission paid to the gallery the amount he made was more than his annual salary in that silly office job years ago in Vietnam I am so proud of him His next wish is to see snow Let s hope for early dusting in the Northeast for him

Former home of J Carter Brown and Kitty Kelley This address is a single home which was divided the portion on the left is hidden behind the tree and is the portion of the home in which Kitty Kelley lived 3035 3037 Dumbarton Ave NW John Carter Brown was born in Providence Rhode Island His family had been prominent since before the Revolution providing the initial endowment for what is today known as Brown University His parents shared a passion for the arts and public service His father John Nicholas Brown served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President Truman While living with his family in Washington the young J Carter Brown fell in love with the National Gallery of Art and first conceived of a career that would allow him to pursue his love for all the arts and to share them with a larger public Although he was already committed to a career in arts administration Brown spent his undergraduate years studying history and literature and acquired a master s degree from Harvard Business School With this preparation he immersed himself in the study of art history in Europe including studies with the renowned art historian Bernard Berenson and completed a second master s degree in art history at New York University In 1961 Brown joined the National Gallery as an assistant to the Director John Walker He was appointed assistant director in 1964 and in 1969 at the age of 34 he was appointed Director He was only the third person to hold this position and would become the longest serving director in the Gallery s history Carter Brown was the first American museum director with a business degree When he set out to raise $50 million for a new acquisitions fund he overshot the target and raised $56 million Even as public funding from the arts came under intense political attack he induced Congress to increase the Gallery s operating budget year after year

A superb example of Beaux Arts architecture the Alexander Hamilton US Custom House at the southern tip of Manhattan has had exterior and ceremonial interior spaces restored and or conserved while old office space was renovated for modern use Restoration and conservation included cleaning the building s Bowling Green facade and cleaning and or conserving interior murals decorative paintings woodwork metalwork and marble Renovations adapted space for Federal courtrooms and ancillary offices for offices for future tenants for meeting rooms and for a 350 seat auditorium with state of the art projection facilities Upgrades of fire safety security telecommunications and heating air conditioning and ventilating systems accompanied alterations Preservation of the Custom House has attracted much public attention The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and it was one of the earliest designations of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for both exterior and public interior spaces The Custom House was designed by the prominent architect Cass Gilbert and constructed between 1902 and 1907 It incorporates Beaux Arts and City Beautiful Movement planning principles and combinations of architecture engineering and fine arts Lavish sculptures paintings and decorations by well known artists of the time such as Daniel Chester French embellish the facade the two story entry portico the main hall parallel to the facade the Rotunda and the Collector s Reception Room The preservation of this fine art was accomplished by an unusual series of subcontracts Preliminary investigations revealed that much artwork had been executed in unique materials and complex applications some of which had deteriorated over time Thus careful research was necessary before restoration could even begin For example murals painted by Regional Marsh in the Rotunda were on a special sand rich plaster too delicate to be cleaned and requiring conservation treatments Selected fine arts c
